Sylvester Day joined the U.S. Army as a Garrison Surgeon's mate in 1807 and was at Fort Michilimackinac when it was captured in 1812. He graduated from Dartmouth School of Medicine in 1813, the same year he was appointed Surgeon with the 4th Infantry. He later served with the 5th Infantry.
